Well you couldn’t have scripted the day much better for our long-serving property-man, Keith Carr. The crowd was large, the sun was shining, and the league boys continued their great form, over-running the Kellerberrin Kats to win by 53 points. Although, the reserves boys could have helped out by having a win, but it wasn’t to be.

Juniors

The day started with the juniors taking on the one team they hadn’t beaten all year, the Kats. However, the boys knew they were playing on their home ground and for a special man, so they played their little hearts out and both grades ran out convincing winners.

They held presentations after the game and Jeremy Stevens was awarded the best player for the older grade of juniors. Aidan Lindley was awarded with the most improved. Congratulations to these two up-and-coming players. The juniors had a fantastic year only losing the one game for the year, I believe, and it’s a credit to everyone who was involved. Wade Mclean was the coach of the older juniors, while Brendan McLean was the coach of the younger age group.

Netball
The Keller girls threw down the white flag and were clearly intimidated by the girls in the red and black after we whooped their arse in the previous clash. It was a pity that the girls’ season finished abruptly but it gave most of them time to get ready for their trip to Northam for their important hockey match.

I’m sure the girls went crazy on Monday celebrating their Mad Monday function.  Actually, I don’t even know if they had one but they should have. On the field, the girls had a very up and down season. They only won 5 games for the season, finishing fifth, just one game out of the top 4. But they put in a great effort each week, with the majority of the girls having to back up two games for the weekend with their hockey matches.

Overall, I give the girls a 6/10 for their year. There is plenty of room for improvement but at the same time, the girls did tremendously well playing 2 games on the one weekend. I have heard that they are playing a netball match against the reserves boys soon so if they can win that game, they may get their rating a bit higher.

Hockey

The girls travelled to Northam at 3.00pm to take on the Aces White team (whom beat them 4-0 in their previous encounter). Unfortunately the girls were unable to get the win, going down 1-4, but they were extremely excited that Emma Mann got a goal. This meant that every girl in the team got a goal for the year, which is a great effort. Except for the goalie for obvious reasons. The girls need to win their last game in 2 weeks, to have any chance of being in the finals and we wish them all of the luck.

Reserves

The reserves took to the stage after the juniors and fielded probably their best team of the season. New additions to the team included Rogan Hutton, a former league player who had several problems with his hamstring but it looks the goods now after a couple of years rest; and Ben Moulton and Brock Fleay, who were both unfortunately dropped from league due to an influx of league players. On paper, it looked unbeatable, but we all know that the game is not played on paper.

The first quarter was very even with both teams hitting the ball hard. The Redbacks looked to control play but kept falling down across half forward. The first quarter ended with both teams on 2 points. The second quarter brought more points for the Redbacks, with 6 in total bringing their half time score to 0.8. The Keller boys were a bit more accurate in front of goal thanks to their main man, Corey Moylan, kicking all three of their goals for the quarter, leaving them with 3.4 for the quarter.  As you can see, the Redbacks had their chances and had more scoring shots than the Kats.

Unfortunately, the break didn’t bring the Redbacks the rejuvenation they needed, as they came out in the third quarter and were only able to put on one goal for the quarter, while the Kats piled on 3.4. The score at ¾ time was a 5-goal lead to the Kats. There was still a glimmer of hope for the Redbacks as they made a late thrust, but were only able to get 3 goals while Keller kicked the solitary goal. This left the Redbacks only 17 points down. It was a shame that they couldn’t come away with the win for their last game of the season, but they weren’t short of trying.

The Redbacks were lead well by their youngest players, in 16-year old, Blake Wansbrough taking the rucking duties for the day, and doing a fantastic job. I’m sure his father, Jimmy, would have taught him a few tricks. Fellow 16-year-old, Fraser Wittwer was another stand-out, showing the rest of the boys how to run and kick goals. He is a very handy player and has already signed his contract for another year to the Redbacks. I have no doubt he will be competing strongly for a league position. Rogan Hutton was another solid contributor for the day, showing he hasn’t lost anything in 2 years, winning a lot of the ball around the ground.

That was the last game for the Reserves boys, but it would be great to see the boys on the training track, challenging the league boys for their spot, and keeping the boys on their toes. Although, the boys only won the one game for the season, they were very close in several others, and were so much more competitive this year than what they have been in the last few years.

This can be put down to several things. First, coach Junior, and his ability to demand the best out of his players. Junior enjoyed his first season of coaching with the first reserves win in about 3 years. He got the boys playing to win, instead of playing to prevent a loss. I’m sure this will hold the boys in good stead for the next few years.

Second, former league players, who came back to help out the younger boys. Players like Daniel Bailey, Craig Reekie, Ian Richardson all provided great talent to the team, and acted as mentors to the younger players, teaching them a few little tricks along the way.

Finally, a strong league team always means that players are going to be filtered through the reserves team when there are too many numbers. This provides great competition for spots in the league team, and prevents the league team from slacking off, in fear of losing their position.

Overall I rate the season a 7/10 for the reserves team. Although there is plenty of room for improvement, the team made great tracks on their road to improvement and played a lot more competitively then what they have in previous years. As the young players gain more experience, and the senior players drop back to help the young guns, then we will see a much improved team.

League

Well this is the game that the huge crowd came to see. The talk of a string of 7 consecutive wins got everyone talking and it was good that past players and supporters could come to the game, support Katie, and enjoy another win by the league boys.

There were a few Friday night inclusions for the league team, including Paul Paggi back from an ankle injury, and James Turner recovered from his bout of tonsillitis. Unfortunately this meant two players had to be dropped after everyone had put in great performances in recent weeks. After a long discussion by the selection committee, Brock Fleay and Ben Moulton were the unfortunate players to go back to Reserves. It’s far from over for these boys, as we all know how quickly injuries can come by. Not that we want any.

Playing with a full strength team against an in-form Kellerberrin outfit on our home ground was the event for the day. The day was also a memorial match for fallen comrade, Gerrard Ugle. His partner, Jade, tossed the coin for the day. Unfortunately, we lost the toss, and had to kick against the very slight wind in the first quarter.

The first quarter started slowly for the boys with the Kats restricting our fast, running play, and keeping us to just 2 goals in the first quarter, while they kicked 1.

The second quarter was a bit more permissive for the Redbacks as we found a bit of space and kicked 4.4, while keeping the Kats to 1.3. They went into the break 6.6 (42) to 2.4(16). We were just doing enough to win, and just needed to lift another gear to put the game out of reach.

The third quarter saw us put on another 4.4, and restricting the Kats to yep, 1.3. They went into the last break 45 points up, and the game was in our hands. Again, we felt we were only doing enough, and only showing patches of the brilliant football we could play. The Kats were missing a few of their best players, so we knew we had to break the game open.

However, we were unable to really break out into our best form, and were content on kicking another 4.4 (yes three consecutive quarters with this score) and allowing the Kats to kick 3.4. It wasn’t our most impressive last quarter finish but we were happy to take the win in front of the huge crowd and for Katie Carr.

It was another great team effort and the medal count on the 27th of August is going to be as close as they get. One would think Rhysy Rowlands would be a strong contender after another great game in the midfield, again bagging a few goals. Or could it be Dale Wansbrough, who had another excellent game at center-half-back, creating plenty of drive out of the backline and quelling his opposition player.

Brian Keay is another player who would have a strong finish to the year, kicking another 6 on the weekend and proving to be unstoppable. Paul Grover, Laine Cleaver, and Justin Mann would all push for the medal with their great seasons, although Bluey Mann obviously missed the last game. James Turner is another who will compete, although he has also missed a few games. Another roughie is big Stuart Murray who has rucked well all year, and should poll well in majority of games. Coach Dean McDonald has also had his fair share of good games.

One thing’s for sure- the spread of votes will be huge amongst the whole team with several players stealing votes off each other. Whoever wins the award will be a worthy recipient and you should come down and have a look on Friday the 27th of August at the Amenities after training.

The boys have a bye this weekend for the first semi final to be played against Kellerberrin and York at York oval. The week after is our turn with a 2nd semi final to be played against Quairading at their home turf. This will be our biggest test of the year, and will be an incredibly great spectator game.  Come down and support the Redbacks!
